Week 1 of the NFL season is just over a month away, and the Tennessee Titans are once again entering a season defined by change.

However, unlike previous years where change brought uncertainty and frustration, 2026 feels different. A new coaching staff, a new offensive identity, and a renewed sense of optimism have created an environment where several Titans players have an opportunity to redefine their careers.

One player who appears ready to take that next step is fourth-year running back Tyjae Spears.

After two seasons filled with flashes of explosiveness but interrupted by injuries and inconsistent opportunities, Spears enters 2026 with the perfect combination of health, scheme fit, and confidence. If everything comes together, this could finally be the breakout season Titans fans have been waiting for.

Here are three reasons for optimism surrounding Tyjae Spears' 2026 campaign.

1. A Healthy Tyjae Spears Changes Everything

Let's be honest — this is not the first time Tyjae Spears has been labeled a breakout candidate.

Since entering the NFL, the former third-round pick has shown flashes of the dynamic playmaker Tennessee envisioned when they selected him in 2023. However, one factor has consistently slowed his momentum: availability.

Spears has dealt with several injuries throughout his NFL career, including a hamstring injury and concussion issues during the 2024 season, followed by a significant high ankle sprain in 2025 that forced him to miss the first four games of the season after being placed on injured reserve.

The encouraging part? None of those injuries have been connected to the knee concerns that followed him into the NFL Draft process. Spears has not missed NFL games because of that previous ACL injury, and entering 2026, he is healthy and positioned to finally build the consistency that has been missing.

The saying goes, "the best ability is availability." For Spears, a full season of health could be the biggest difference between being viewed as a talented rotational player and becoming one of Tennessee's most dangerous offensive weapons.

2. Brian Daboll's Offense Fits Spears Perfectly

One of the biggest reasons for optimism surrounding Spears is the arrival of Brian Daboll.

Daboll's offensive philosophy centers around creating mismatches, utilizing pre-snap motion, and finding creative ways to put playmakers in space. That approach fits perfectly with Spears' skill set.

Through his first two NFL seasons, Spears has averaged 4.6 yards per carry, showcasing his explosiveness and ability to create big plays with limited touches. He has also proven to be a reliable receiving option out of the backfield, which makes him an ideal fit in an offense that values versatility.

Daboll has historically utilized running backs who can contribute in multiple areas — running between the tackles, catching passes, and staying on the field in passing situations. That three-down ability is exactly what Spears brings.

With Cam Ward developing at quarterback and defenses forced to respect Tennessee's passing attack, Spears could benefit from lighter boxes and more opportunities in space. Screens, angle routes, and creative formations could allow Spears to showcase the explosiveness that made him one of college football's most exciting backs at Tulane.

A season with 1,200-plus total yards is not unrealistic if Tennessee makes him a focal point of the offense.

3. Training Camp Is Showing a Different Tyjae Spears

During the offseason, Spears was cited with a statement of hope and excitement for the Titans in 2026. The running back said:
"We have a new logo, and we have a lot of new things around here. So, we are going to have a winning record this year."

That confidence has been backed up by Spears' performance throughout training camp. The former Tulane running back has consistently been one of the offense's most explosive playmakers, flashing the burst, vision, and versatility that has reminded people why he was such an intriguing draft pick. Whether it's breaking off chunk runs between the tackles, creating mismatches as a receiver out of the backfield, or making defenders miss in space, Spears has been a frequent standout during team periods.

As matter of fact, Spears is attributed with catching the most passes so far in one week of training camp. Titans Jim Wyatt notes that Spears has caught nearly 12 passes from QB's so far this training camp.

Just as encouraging has been his availability. After injuries interrupted portions of his first two NFL seasons, Spears has been a full participant throughout camp, allowing him to build chemistry with rookie quarterback Cam Ward and further establish himself in Brian Daboll's new offense. Coaches have expanded his workload, and Spears has responded by making plays on a near-daily basis.

Training camp alone doesn't guarantee a breakout season, but it can reveal which players are taking the next step. So far, Spears looks every bit like a player ready to do just that. If his camp production carries into the regular season, his prediction of a winning season may not be the only thing that proves to be true.
